Future starship "leopard" power aesthetics, real shot of BYD Leopard 8
Not long ago, BYD Leopard, a brand established less than a year ago, held its spring conference, introducing several new cars, including the "583 family." Among them, the mass-produced version of the largest SUV, Leopard 8, also made its debut at the Beijing Auto Show. However, the interior of this model, which is expected to be launched this year, remains a mystery. But no worries-let's take this opportunity to get a brief understanding of the car's exterior.

In terms of appearance, the BYD Leopard 8 follows the design concept of "future starship aesthetics." The body shape adopts the popular square style. The vehicle is expected to have a length of over 5200mm, a width of approximately 2000mm, and a height exceeding 1900mm. Unlike some traditional energy hardcore SUVs, this design is full of technology.
At the front, the large grille is adorned with three chrome strips, and the headlights on both sides are connected to the grille. Combined with the wide body size and the two ridges on the front hood, the front of the car exudes power. The bumper features a bite-type connection, similar to a mortise and tenon structure. According to the official statement, this design not only enhances the vehicle's aesthetic but also improves the integrity and solidity of the body.

The design of the split headlights differs slightly from that of the BYD Leopard 5. The two staggered square matrix headlights are equipped with white daytime running light guides, which seamlessly connect with the LED light strip above the grille. The clean lines of the lamp cavity give the BYD Leopard 8 a striking appearance.

As the flagship SUV of the "583 family," the technology features are maximized. The laser radar serving the advanced intelligent driving system, known as the Eye of God, along with the dual-view perception cameras for the road condition preview system, are all centrally positioned on the roof. The undulating curves resemble a crown and blend seamlessly into the design, consistently showcasing the vehicle's intelligence.

Moving to the side, the large D-window stands out. The window ratio across the car is 3:1, with the silver trim on the side of the window shaped like a right-angle trapezoid, featuring a brand logo below. The waistline bulges significantly at the rear door, adding to the vehicle's sense of power and echoing the design of a carrier thruster in the "Starship" theme.

Unlike its smaller sibling, the BYD Leopard 5, the exterior mirrors of the BYD Leopard 8 appear thicker, with the surround camera positioned on the mirror arm rather than under the mirror cover. Additionally, the BYD Leopard 8 does not use the mechanical door handles found on the Leopard 5. To maintain the side lines' integrity, it opts for hidden door handles, similar to those on the concept car, equipped with keyless entry functionality.

The vehicle's rims are six-spoke, petal-shaped, with a size of 275/50 R21, offering a relatively wide profile. The manufacturer may provide the option of smaller rims in the future to cater to different preferences. The factory tires are Michelin PILOT SPORT EV, specifically developed for new energy vehicles.

The rear of the car features more three-dimensional lines, with a star-ring-style semi-enclosed spare tire cover that isn't thin, echoing the "Starship" design language. The half-exposed full-size spare tire adds to the vehicle's ruggedness, distinguishing it from many "small backpacks." After all, it's a hardcore SUV, and the wilderness is its true domain.

The taillight design is more conventional than the concept car SUPER 8. The C-shaped main light body and the six vertically arranged horizontal light sources create a trailing light effect when illuminated. The official statement notes that this design is inspired by the tail of the "Starship" thruster.

The logos on both sides of the tailgate symbolize its premium status. The BYD Leopard 8 is built on the longitudinally arranged DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) super hybrid off-road platform and is expected to be equipped with a 2.0T high-power engine. It also features the Yunyan-P active hydraulic body control system, the pinnacle of the Yunyan series. Specific configuration details will be revealed upon the vehicle's launch.

In terms of suspension, the BYD Leopard 8, with its non-load-bearing body, is equipped with double wishbone independent suspension at both the front and rear, along with three differential locks. Due to the characteristics of the DMO super hybrid off-road platform, the vehicle eliminates the traditional drive shaft, replacing the central differential lock with an electronic inter-axle energy center lock.
In summary, as the brand's off-road flagship, the BYD Leopard 8 is expected to reach new heights in both technological configuration and hardware strength. While the interior has not yet been revealed, it's anticipated that designs resembling an aircraft cockpit in the central control area will be fully realized, with possible upgrades. Beyond the product itself, the key question remains: how will the BYD Leopard 8 be priced? And will it become a significant competitor to the Tank 700? We'll keep a close watch on its launch.
